Gardening, whether as a hobby or profession, requires not just a green thumb but also an organized approach to managing the tools of the trade. The joy of cultivating plants and watching them grow is often overshadowed by the frustration of misplaced tools or the time wasted searching for the right implement among a cluttered collection. Organizing garden tools is essential for efficiency, safety, and extending the life of these valuable assets.

An orderly garden shed or storage area transforms the gardening experience. It ensures tools are readily accessible, easy to find, and properly maintained, allowing gardeners to focus on the rewarding aspects of their work. From the smallest spade to the largest rake, every tool plays a crucial role in the creation and maintenance of a vibrant garden. Proper organization not only saves time but also prevents injuries caused by tripping over tools or using equipment that’s not in optimal condition.

Let’s explore practical and effective solutions for organizing your garden tools.

Best Storage Solutions for Garden Tools Based on My 20 Year Gardening Experience

Embarking on my journey to organize garden tools, I discovered the beauty and efficiency of tailored storage solutions. Here’s how I navigated through the myriad of options, finding the perfect fit for my gardening tools and lifestyle:

Tailored Storage Options

My collection of garden tools is a diverse mix of hand tools, long-handled tools, and a few essential electric tools. Each category demanded a unique storage approach.

For hand tools like secateurs, trowels, and gloves, I found that small bins and toolboxes kept them neatly organized and easily accessible.

Long-handled tools such as rakes, hoes, and shovels presented a bit of a challenge due to their size. Hanging them on wall-mounted racks proved to be a game-changer, making the best use of vertical space while keeping my shed floor clear.

Electric tools required a bit more care, given their value and sensitivity to moisture. I dedicated a shelf in my shed where they could be stored away from the elements, yet handy for when I needed them.

Buying Ready Garden Tool Organizers

Initially hesitant to invest in ready-made garden tool organizers, I soon realized their value.

Commercially available storage systems, like tool cabinets and wall-mounted racks, offered a level of convenience and efficiency I hadn’t anticipated. These systems are designed with gardeners in mind, featuring spaces tailored to the shapes and sizes of various tools. The decision to purchase a few key pieces, such as a sturdy tool cabinet for my most-used tools and a wall-mounted rack for long-handed tools, significantly improved my storage situation.

DIY Storage Solutions

My budget-conscious side was always on the lookout for cost-effective solutions. DIY projects became a fun and fulfilling part of organizing my garden tools.

Repurposing old pallets into a tool holder for my long-handled tools not only saved money but added a personal touch to my garden shed. Old containers and buckets were transformed into holders for small hand tools, proving that a little creativity goes a long way in achieving organization without breaking the bank.

Recommendations for Commercially Available Storage Systems

For those looking to streamline their garden tool storage quickly, I recommend exploring the range of commercially available storage systems. From wall-mounted racks that keep tools off the ground to tool cabinets that protect and organize, there’s something for every gardener’s needs. Brands like Rubbermaid and Keter offer durable options that withstand the test of time and the elements, a worthy investment for any serious gardener.

Limited Space Solutions

Space constraints can be a significant hurdle in organizing garden tools. For fellow gardeners facing this challenge, especially in garden-rich communities like Surrey, BC, where gardening is a cherished activity, considering a storage unit rental can be a practical solution. Companies like NationWide offer affordable storage options in Surrey BC, that cater to gardeners, providing a secure and accessible place for tools and equipment. Renting a storage unit allowed me to keep seasonal and less frequently used tools safe and out of the way, freeing up valuable space in my shed for everyday essentials.

Through trial, error, and a bit of creativity, I’ve managed to find storage solutions that cater to the diversity of my garden tool collection. Whether opting for DIY projects, investing in ready-made organizers, or even utilizing external storage options, the key is finding a system that works for you and your gardening practices. The right storage solutions not only keep your tools organized but also enhance your overall gardening experience, making each moment in the garden more productive and enjoyable.

Why Organize Garden Tools?

One of the most transformative lessons I’ve learned through my years tending to gardens is the profound impact of organization on my gardening practice. Organizing garden tools isn’t just about a neat appearance; it’s about fundamentally enhancing the way we interact with our garden and our tools. Here’s how embracing organization has revolutionized my gardening journey:

Saving Time

Before I organized my tools, I spent more time searching for them than actually using them. Misplaced pruners, buried gloves, and elusive trowels were the norm. Once I dedicated spaces for each tool and kept them consistently in their designated spots, I noticed a dramatic shift. The time saved was no longer wasted in frustration but invested back into nurturing my garden, allowing for more moments of hands-in-the-dirt satisfaction.

Prolonging Tool Life

Disorganization was silently costing me, not just in time, but also in the premature wear and tear of my tools. Tools left out in the weather or thrown together in a heap suffered. Rust and damage were frequent visitors. The shift to organized storage meant each tool had a protected place, shielded from the elements and potential mishaps. This care extended their life significantly, turning what were once frequent replacements into lasting investments.

Enhancing Garden Safety

The chaos of an unorganized garden shed was not just an inconvenience; it posed real safety hazards. Stumbling over a rake or cutting myself on a misplaced shear were wake-up calls. Implementing an organization system eradicated these dangers, creating a safer environment for myself and anyone who joined me in the garden. The peace of mind knowing that every tool is safely stored away when not in use is invaluable.

Impact of Disorganization on Productivity and Garden Maintenance

On a deeper level, disorganization eroded my gardening morale. The constant search for tools, the accidents, and the cluttered workspace drained my energy and enthusiasm. It was a barrier between me and the garden I loved. The disorder made it challenging to maintain a regular gardening schedule, impacting the health and vibrancy of my plants. Tasks were delayed, and the maintenance of the garden suffered as a result.

Organizing my garden tools transformed my gardening experience from one of frustration and inefficiency to a practice of joy and productivity. It was a revelation to see how the simple act of organizing could have such a profound effect on my gardening success and personal satisfaction. Now, stepping into my garden shed sparks a sense of readiness and excitement for the day’s work ahead, knowing that everything I need is in its right place, ready to help me bring my garden to life.

Container gardening is like nature’s magic trick, allowing you to cultivate lush gardens in the smallest of spaces. Whether you have a tiny balcony, a postage-stamp-sized yard, or just want to add some greenery to your home, container gardening is your go-to solution. In this guide, we’ll delve into the art of container gardening, from selecting the perfect pots to nurturing thriving plants. Let’s transform your small space into a vibrant oasis!

Why Container Gardening Is a Game-Changer

Container gardening is a game-changer for many reasons. It’s accessible, versatile, and brings the joy of gardening to everyone, regardless of their living situation. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a newbie, here’s why you should give container gardening a try:

  • Accessibility for All. Container gardening doesn’t discriminate. You can do it in an apartment, a condominium, or even on a narrow windowsill. It’s a garden-on-the-go, making it ideal for urban dwellers, users of Japan betting sites, and those with limited outdoor space.
  • Total Control. With containers, you have complete control over your garden’s environment. You can tailor the soil, sunlight, and water to suit each plant’s specific needs, ensuring they thrive.
  • Seasonal Freedom. Containers allow you to move your garden with the seasons. No more worrying about frost or scorching sun; you can protect your precious plants by simply relocating them.
  • Aesthetic Appeal. Container gardens can be visually stunning. They serve as both a focal point and a decorative element, enhancing the beauty of your surroundings.

Choosing the Right Containers

Before you get your hands dirty, let’s talk containers. Your choice of pots can make or break your container garden, so choose wisely.

Size Matters: Picking the Perfect Pot

The size of your container is crucial. Too small, and your plants will be cramped. Too large, and you’ll waste space and soil. Consider the mature size of your plants and choose pots that provide ample room for their roots to grow.

Material Matters: Pros and Cons of Different Containers

Containers come in various materials, each with its pros and cons. From terracotta to plastic, wood to ceramic, let’s weigh the options and find the best fit for your garden.

Selecting the Ideal Location

Location, location, location—this rule applies to container gardening too. The success of your garden depends on where you place it.

Sunlight 101: Understanding Your Plant’s Needs

Different plants have different sunlight requirements. Learn how to match your plant’s needs with your garden’s location, whether it’s full sun, partial shade, or deep shade.

Space-Saving Solutions: Vertical Gardening

Short on horizontal space? Go vertical! Discover the wonders of vertical gardening and how it can turn a small area into a lush, green paradise.

Prepping Your Container

Now that you’ve organized your pots and selected your location, it’s time to prepare your containers for planting. Don’t compromise on soil quality. Discover the key attributes of a high-quality potting mix and understand why it’s essential for the well-being of your plants. Remember, waterlogged roots are a plant’s greatest foe. Learn how to establish effective drainage in your containers to ensure the happiness and health of your plants.

Choosing the Right Plants

Container gardening provides an expansive platform for turning your botanical aspirations into reality. But the question remains: what plants should you select? The key lies in mastering the skill of harmonizing various plant varieties to craft captivating and aesthetically pleasing compositions within your containers. Whether you desire aromatic herbs to elevate your culinary creations or vibrant blossoms to adorn your outdoor haven, delve into the realm of selecting the finest plants for your container garden.

Planting and Caring

Planting and caring for your container garden is crucial for its success. Simplify the process by selecting the right potting mix, ensuring proper drainage, and arranging your plants strategically. When it comes to watering, maintain a balance to prevent over- or underwatering by checking the soil’s moisture level and watering thoroughly. Additionally, focus on regular pruning and appropriate fertilization to keep your container garden thriving and looking its best. With these techniques, your green oasis will flourish, enhancing your space year-round.

Dealing with Common Issues

Addressing common issues like pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies is vital for a healthy container garden.

  • Pests and Diseases: Prevention and Solutions: Pests and diseases can pose challenges for container gardening. To prevent them, maintain good sanitation and regularly inspect your plants for issues. Isolate infected plants to prevent spread. Use natural remedies like neem oil or insecticidal soap for pest control, and consider copper-based fungicides for fungal diseases.
  • Nutrient Deficiency: How to Spot and Fix It: Nutrient deficiencies can affect your plants’ health. Look for symptoms like yellowing leaves or stunted growth. Identify the specific deficiency, like iron or nitrogen, and choose an appropriate fertilizer. Apply it as directed on the package. Organic fertilizers offer gradual nutrient release for long-term plant health.

Monitoring your container garden for these issues and taking swift action will ensure your plants thrive, creating a beautiful and vibrant oasis.

Container Gardening Inspiration

Container gardening is a creative canvas for personal expression. It’s more than just growing plants; it’s about crafting unique miniature worlds and themed gardens that mirror your style and personality. Let’s dive into container gardening inspiration:

Themed Gardens

Container gardens offer the perfect stage to bring themed gardens to life. Whether it’s a captivating succulent paradise with diverse shapes and textures or an aromatic herb haven where basil and rosemary thrive together, the options are boundless. Themed gardens enable you to tell a story through your plant choices, infusing depth and character into your indoor or outdoor space.

Upcycling Containers

Embrace sustainability by repurposing everyday items into unconventional plant containers. Old wooden crates, vintage tea tins, or even discarded footwear can become charming homes for your plants. Not only do these upcycled containers reduce waste, but they also infuse your garden with a dash of uniqueness. They serve as conversation starters, showcasing your dedication to both creativity and eco-friendliness.

Unleash Your Creativity

Container gardening is your artistic playground. Fearlessly blend different containers, and experiment with sizes, shapes, and colors. Craft dynamic displays by merging various plant varieties, heights, and hues to achieve visually captivating compositions. Container gardening provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, offering moments of tranquility and mindfulness.

In recent years, gardening has seen a remarkable transformation. What used to be a simple hobby has evolved into a dynamic and sustainable activity that blends technology, innovation, and eco-consciousness. As we gaze into the future, the gardening landscape appears vibrant and promising, with sustainable trends and high-tech solutions leading the way. In this article, we’ll explore how gardening is evolving and what you can expect in the realm of sustainable gardening practises and cutting-edge technology.

The Rise of Sustainable Gardening

Sustainable gardening isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a revolution. More gardeners are embracing eco-friendly practises to reduce their carbon footprint. Here’s why:

  • EcoFriendly Landscaping. Traditional lawns are making way for native plants and drought-resistant landscapes. Eco-friendly gardeners are opting for low-maintenance, water-efficient designs that support local biodiversity.
  • Organic Gardening. The use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides is on the decline. Organic gardening methods are gaining popularity, fostering healthier soil, plants, and ecosystems.
  • Permaculture Principles. Permaculture is all about creating self-sustaining ecosystems. Gardeners are integrating permaculture principles to reduce waste and improve soil health.

High-Tech Gardening Solutions

Technology is reshaping the way we garden. From smart tools to advanced sensors, here’s how technology is taking root in our gardens.

Smart Irrigation Systems

Smart irrigation controllers employ advanced technology that leverages real-time weather data to meticulously fine-tune and optimise watering schedules. This ingenious approach not only conserves and preserves our precious water resources but also serves as a bulwark against the perilous consequences of excessive irrigation, ensuring that every drop of water is judiciously allocated for the benefit of your garden.

Garden Apps

In the world of gardening, the advent of mobile applications has revolutionised the way both seasoned horticulturists and novice gardeners engage with their flora. These cutting-edge apps deliver invaluable real-time insights and guidance on plant care, significantly boosting the chances of success for even the most inexperienced green thumbs. Within the palm of your hand, these digital companions seamlessly combine plant identification capabilities, essential pest management wisdom, and timely watering reminders. With such multifaceted support, these apps become indispensable allies in nurturing a thriving and flourishing garden.

Indoor Gardening Gadgets

For urban dwellers, indoor gardening has become a trend. The incorporation of high-tech indoor garden sets with cutting-edge LED lighting systems supports this shift towards indoor gardening. This technological innovation has, in turn, unlocked the remarkable potential to cultivate a wide array of fresh herbs and vegetables throughout all four seasons of the year, thereby granting urban gardeners a continuous source of homegrown produce and elevating the indoor gardening experience to unprecedented heights of sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Gardening for a Greener Planet

Gardening isn’t solely about enhancing the visual appeal of outdoor spaces; it assumes a pivotal role in combatting the far-reaching effects of climate change and actively contributing to the development of a more environmentally sustainable and healthier planet for current and future generations.

Carbon Sequestration

Gardening offers a simple yet remarkably effective strategy in the ongoing battle against greenhouse gas emissions. This is because plants possess the innate ability to naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby significantly reducing the concentration of this harmful greenhouse gas in the air. This natural carbon sequestration process plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change and contributes significantly to environmental sustainability efforts.

Pollinator-Friendly Gardens

The creation of pollinator-friendly gardens assumes a crucial role in the conservation of declining bee populations. By providing a hospitable environment for these vital insects, we contribute significantly to the protection and sustainability of our food supply. The interconnected relationship between pollinators and the crops we rely on for nourishment underscores the importance of fostering bee-friendly habitats in our landscapes and gardens. This proactive approach helps ensure the continued abundance and security of our food sources, safeguarding both the well-being of ecosystems and the human population that depends on them.

Urban Green Spaces

The emergence of urban gardening initiatives is orchestrating a remarkable transformation, turning concrete jungles into vibrant green havens. This shift brings a multitude of advantages, including improved air quality and strengthened food security, fostering healthier and more sustainable urban environments.

Challenges on the Horizon

As we embrace sustainable and high-tech gardening, we must also address the challenges that lie ahead:

  • Privacy and Data Security – Smart gardening devices raise concerns about data privacy. Gardeners need to be aware of how their gardening data is collected and used.
  • Accessibility – High-tech gardening solutions can be expensive. Ensuring accessibility for all gardeners, regardless of income, is a challenge that needs to be tackled.
  • Maintaining Traditional Wisdom – While technology is a boon, it’s essential not to forget the wisdom of traditional gardening practises.

Cultivating the Future Garden

Looking ahead, we envision a future where our gardens transcend their traditional roles as merely beautiful spaces. They will evolve into dynamic ecological powerhouses that harness the synergy of sustainability and technology. This harmonious fusion will enable us to craft environments that simultaneously nurture our spirits and contribute positively to the well-being of our planet.

As we wrap up this journey into the future of gardening, remember that you can be part of this exciting evolution. Whether you’re planting native species, installing a smart irrigation system, or simply tending to your window box of herbs, every action counts. So, go ahead, get your hands dirty, and watch your garden thrive in this sustainable and high-tech era.

People have been gardening for as long as the world is. Plants, vegetables, herbs, or flowers growing in your backyard or a preferred location is a sight to behold. It is not also surprising that many people even try to cut costs on fruits and vegetables by growing theirs. Unfortunately, there is the passion and the part to get started.

There is no specific way to start a garden, but there are certain steps to follow to be successful at it, including spending money, time, and resources. We reached out to Kara Johnson, the finance expert at PaydayBears, who spoke about the availability of cash advance payment loans to people interested in various projects, like gardening. She mentioned that their organization offers a fast and reliable loan procedure and doesn’t necessarily require a good credit score.

Are you ready to harvest your own homegrown fruits and vegetables? Then, it would be best if you listened to what experts say in this article.

See here for 10 steps to gardening for beginners.

Outline What to Grow

The first step to running a successful garden is to know what to grow. You don’t just plant anything – you have to be specific. Your plant selection depends on what you can handle and the resources available. However, you should focus on fruits, herbs, and vegetables you and your family love.

Find a Good Site

Once you’ve outlined what to grow, you should consider where to set your garden. Usually, most people set up their gardens in the backyard, out of reach of children and pets. However, that is not the general rule of thumb – you can set it somewhere else as long as it is accessible and convenient.

Get Good Tools and Equipment

You cannot start a garden without investing in the appropriate tools and equipment. Depending on what you’ve decided to grow, you will need many of them. However, some general basic tools are garden hoes, rakes, shovels, water can, and other hand equipment. You should avoid buying cheap tools.

Consider Sunlight and Water System

While setting up your garden, you should also remember two important factors – sunlight and water. Your plants need both for growth and survival. So, you should consider somewhere with enough sunlight – up to 6 hours. And if you have a water system close by, it would be a good idea.

Test and Build Soil

Just before building garden beds, ensure to verify the soil type. Every plant has a specific soil type they can survive on. Therefore, you should test for the soil pH – to determine whether it is neutral, alkaline, or acidic. You could also build the soil, enriching it with certain materials to improve fertility.

Get Seeds

You can get your seeds as soon as your soil becomes ready in the garden. You can buy seeds from reliable farmers’ markets or collect them from fruits or vegetables. Alternatively, you can transplant if the seeds are already in the nursery. You should be careful with the process.

Follow Recommended Planting Procedures

As a beginner, you must learn about your plants and the planting procedures. They vary from each other, and you should be updated about every necessary information. If a method regarding a vegetable or fruit has been recommended, you should follow it strictly because it could contribute to the plant’s survival.

Keep Garden Clean

Cleanliness is important when building a garden. You don’t want anything interfering with the growth of your vegetables and leading to their deaths. So, every now and then, you should clear the weeds and remove growth-limiting agents.

Feed Your Plant

Apart from sunlight and water, your plant needs to be fed. Regularly feed your plant with growth-facilitating fertilizers or plant food to improve quality. You can check out expert-recommended plant food options available.

Harvest

The final step is harvesting your vegetables, fruits, or herbs when necessary. The joy of running a garden is having a good harvest at the end.

If need be, you could extend the size of your garden with more demand for these plants.

One of the favorite activities of plant lovers is tending to their gardens. It takes some time for new garden owners to identify the necessary and unnecessary tools.

This is because many gardening tools are out there, and they serve different purposes.

Below is a list of garden tools every gardener should have;

1. Gloves

A pair of gloves is needed to protect your hands from injuries and dirt. Gloves also protect the hands from diseases such as legionellosis.

Gloves can be used for picking small twigs and pinching the soil. It also gives a firmer grip on other tools.

Types of Gardening Gloves

There are two major types of gloves: Light duty and heavy-duty gloves.

  • Light-duty. Light-duty gloves can be used for most gardening projects that do not require much hand protection. Such activities include planting and thinning. They are designed to protect the hand from dirt and small scratches.
  • Heavy-duty. Heavy-duty gloves protect the hand from thorns, thistles, and other prickly weeds like Canada Thistle. They are also perfect for intensive garden activities like picking branches and rocks. The only drawback with their use is that they may be less comfortable due to their thickness.

Irrespective of the type of glove you buy, consider the grip, fit, durability, and breathability.

2. Hand Fork

The hand fork, also called “cultivator,” is useful for cultivating, digging up soil, and transplanting seedlings. Aside from these tasks, you will often use the hand fork for digging up weeds.

It can also thoroughly mix additives and compost with the soil.

Types of Hand Forks

Hand forks usually have three-pointed prongs called tines. The tines may either be flat or round.

  • Hand fork with flat tines. Hand forks with flat tines are suitable for weeding and transplanting flowers.
  • Hand fork with round tines. Hand forks with round tines handle well when used to aerate the soil during pre-planting activities.

Avoid buying hand forks that lack strong handles and shafts. The tang needs to be firm to avoid injury during use.

3. Watering Can

Watering can need no introduction. It comes with a spout and handle and is usually made of plastic, ceramic, or metal.

Plastic watering cans are less expensive and lighter to carry, except they are not durable. Ceramic watering cans are heavy, expensive, and can break easily. They are best for garden decoration. On the other hand, metallic watering cans are durable but heavy and can last longer if galvanized to prevent rust.

The capacity of your watering can should be 1-2 gallons for easy use as it would save you the number of trips.

Tips to Effectively Water Your Plant

  • Confirm the water need of the plant.
  • Water the soil, not the leaves.
  • Water thoroughly and evenly.

4. Hand Pruners

Hand pruners, also called secateurs, are used for cutting soft branches, flower stems, leaves, and vegetables. Pruning helps restrict the plant’s size, remove dead parts, and improve the plant’s health. It can also protect the plants from pests and damage. Likewise, you may need to prune to ensure your family’s safety around a plant.

Types of Pruners

  • Bypass pruners. The bypass pruner is a must-have tool for gardeners. It features two curved blades that bypass each other like scissors.

It is effective in trimming and cutting flexible stems.

  • Straight blade pruners. Rose growers and other gardeners prefer this pruner because it can easily get into tight spaces without damaging the flower.
  • Anvil pruners. These pruners have a blade that closes against the anvil. It is excellent for cutting woody stems.
  • Ratchet pruners. The ratchet pruners are similar to anvil pruners but easier for gardeners with small hands. It is useful for cutting tough stems with little effort.

5. Hand Trowel

A hand trowel is used for digging small holes, planting seeds, and digging up stubborn weeds. When choosing a trowel, pick the one with a narrow and sturdy blade.

Types of Hand Trowel

  • Dixter trowel. A Dixter trowel has a blunt end. It is perfect for planting and weeding.
  • Potting trowel. The potting trowel has high sides that help it scoop soil. It is great for moving and transplanting.
  • Traditional trowel. A traditional trowel is one of the must-have gardening tools as it can perform most tasks of the other trowels.
  • Transplanting trowel. It features a long narrow blade that makes it easy to dig.
  • Weeding trowel. The weeding trowel features a sharp blade that makes it great for cutting and uprooting weed.

Conclusion

To start gardening, you do not need every tool in the market. The five highlighted above will get you started.

Your gardening tools will eventually increase as your experience improves, and your garden expands.

Apple trees of dessert varieties popular on the market are mostly not frost-resistant. Recent sharp temperature changes during thaws and severe frosts have significantly damaged orchards and fruit nurseries in the middle climate zone.

Since cold air accumulates in the lower part of the slope, near dense forest belts and buildings, to avoid damage to fruit trees by low winter temperatures and spring frosts, the garden should be laid out in an area where such problems do not exist, although it is not easy to find such a site in the horticultural region.

HARDENING OF TREES
With the end of growth, shorter days, and the onset of low temperatures, trees harden and enter the phase of winter dormancy. Hardening conditions can be improved by appropriate agricultural measures.

Excessive nitrogen fertilization should be avoided, as it impairs the ability to harden by “delayed” growth of seedlings in the nursery or trees in a young garden and threatens to freeze even in moderately cold winters.

Hardening is accompanied by water loss and accumulation of sugars and specific protein compounds, acquisition of a fiber-mesh structure by cells and higher permeability of cell walls and cytoplasm. As a result, tissues become resistant to freezing at temperatures several tens of degrees below zero and are not damaged by ice crystals. With a slow decrease in temperature, hardened plants can withstand severe frosts, but sudden cold after a warm autumn is very harmful to them.

In a nursery, it is risky to keep dug seedlings with insufficiently lignified shoots in an unprotected pinning in the open ground; it is better to store them in a refrigerator at a temperature slightly below 0°C and the highest possible humidity. Purchased seedlings can be stored under cover, sprinkling the roots with wet sand, fresh sawdust or soil, placing poisoned mouse baits nearby, and systematically monitoring the condition of the plants.

In order to protect rootstocks and budding eyes from winter damage and to retain snow in the seedling school, rye or mustard is sometimes sown in the fall, which, if necessary, is destroyed with a contact herbicide in early spring.

TREATMENT OF DAMAGE
February thaws with sunny warm days and the return of cold weather cause a lot of losses. In February, when the air temperature is below 10°C, the bark of trees on the sunny side can heat up to +50°C, which causes the bole to burn and crack. In the past, this was prevented by whitewashing, but in modern orchards with dense tree planting, this requires appropriate costs.

PROTECTION AGAINST FROST
In the United States, heating with coal and peat briquettes, paraffin candles, diesel fuel, and gas has been practiced for more than a hundred years to protect citrus, and less commonly peach and apple trees from frost. The heat sources are placed according to the 6×6 or 7×7 m (204-277 pieces/ha) scheme, maintaining a sufficiently strong constant and regular heating with the consumption of a considerable amount of combustible materials until the frost stops, and the gas burner system sometimes turns on automatically.

In order to limit and, if possible, eliminate the stock of infection that has accumulated during the growing season (pathogens on the bark of the stem, skeletal branches, shoots, on the leaves of trees after harvesting and fallen leaves and fruits, on the soil surface), a number of phytosanitary measures should be taken in the fall. These measures will be effective if agricultural producers know for sure the sources of infection reservation in winter for each pathogen, from which the primary infection of phytopathogens is formed in spring. Timely phytosanitary measures in fruit plantations significantly reduce the harmfulness of diseases.

The following common diseases cause great damage to pome fruit crops: apple and pear scab, moniliosis (fruit rot), black cancer, cytosporosis, common cancer, rust, late blight, powdery mildew of apple, brownish leaves of pear, white spot of pear leaves, root bacterial cancer, bacterial bark cancer.

The main source of apple scab infection is fallen affected leaves, which contain pseudothecia of the pathogen, for pears – affected shoots, in which the pathogen overwinters in the form of mycelium, and in the spring conidial sporulation is formed immediately on the affected shoots. An additional source for pears is also fallen affected leaves with pseudothecia of the fungus. The harmfulness of the scab lies in the fall of the ovary, premature leaf fall, weak growth of annual shoots, and deterioration of plant winter hardiness. The scab dramatically reduces the quality of the fruit, so with its increased development, sometimes about 50% of the fruit does not meet the requirements of the standard.

The causative agents of moniliosis remain in the form of mummified fruits during the winter, on which conidial sporulation pads of pathogens are formed in the spring. The fungus Monilia laxa f. sp. malia overwinters in the form of mycelium in the affected shoots. The harmfulness of the disease lies in the death of inflorescences, the death of rings, fruit rods, and fruit decay both during the growing season and during storage. Fruit yield losses often reach 20-30 and often 60-70%. Fruits rot from moniliosis not only in the garden but also during storage.

The source of black cancer infection is a wintering mycelium in the affected bark of the stem, skeletal branches, shoots, mummified fruits, as well as pycnidia with pycnospores of the fungus on the affected organs. The harmfulness of the disease is that infected fruits do not have a marketable appearance, severely affected leaves fall off prematurely, which leads to a weakening of the tree as a whole, the affected bark cracks and falls off, causing the death of the crown. Affected trees die within three to four years. The disease causes especially great damage in fruit-bearing orchards, as it is often necessary to uproot trees at the beginning of their fruiting.

January is rightfully considered the beginning of the gardening season. Snow, frost, and a decent amount of time before spring arrives are not a hindrance to those who plan and prepare for the new season in advance.

It is especially important not to forget about sowing crops for seedlings in January that have a long germination period and need to be taken care of in advance. Another category of plants is those from which you want to get an extra-early harvest or flowering, in the case of ornamental crops.

It’s up to you to decide what to sow in January based on your personal preferences. It is important to remember that parsley, dill, cilantro, etc. do not tolerate the seedling method of growing. But sowing them in January is worthwhile at least to get fresh vitamin greens on the windowsill long before they appear in the beds. It is recommended to use phytolamps, which provide optimal lighting conditions and do not allow plants to stretch upwards.

Sowing vegetables
What to plant for seedlings in January is determined by the duration of seed germination and how soon the crop should enter the fruiting period. Another category is seeds of dubious quality, which need to be re-sown in time if they germinate poorly. The most suitable candidates for January sowing include the following crops.

Celery
The slow germination of celery is due to a film of essential oils that repel pests and protect the plant from infections. However, the oils are insoluble in water, so it takes a long time for unprepared seeds to swell and germinate. To improve and accelerate germination, it is recommended to soak the seeds for half an hour in hot water (no higher than 50℃) and immediately rinse them with cold water.

Onions
Planting seeds for seedlings in January will allow you to get a harvest in one season: in July-August, you will harvest onions, and by allocating a separate bed for seedlings, you can organize onion forcing on it. To accelerate seed germination, cook a light paste (2-3 tbsp of starch or flour per 1 liter of water), cool to 40-50℃ and soak the seeds in it for an hour. After that, sow the seeds without drying them.

Tomatoes
For high-quality calibrated seeds of medium and late varieties, no special treatment is required. But if we are talking about early varieties that you plan to grow in a greenhouse and it is important to get the harvest as early as possible, place the seeds in a damp cloth until they swell, so the emergence of seedlings will be significantly accelerated.
